Training is required before use.

  • Students must be trained at the start of each Fall semester

Staff members should replace the blade whenever needed.

  • Students are not permitted to replace the blade

If settings are changed to meet cutting needs, the tool should be returned to a book-box board cutting default setting when finished to minimize student interaction with the cutter.

  • The straight cutter should be hooked onto the guide rail in the standard thickness mat board depth setting
  • The mat guide, slip sheet, and rail production stop should be removed
  • For reference, see training documents below: Straight Cutting Board to Size (PDF, page 4) or Downsizing a Mat Board (YouTube)
  • Associated parts must remain with the cutter when not in use

Students will not be permitted to cut board or paper that exceeds the dimensions of the cutter. They may mark measurements, but staff will need to cut using a hand tool.

Mat Cutter Components

Straight Cutting Board to Size

  1. Remove mat guide and slip sheet.
  2. Set measuring bar stop to the length of the cut.
  3. Place the board under the guide rail and against the measuring bar stop.
  4. Grasp the handle of the straight cutting head, pivot down, and slowly pull the cutting head towards you. Keep constant downward pressure on teh cutting head and guide rail as you cut.

Caution: Be careful to control the cutting head as it breaks through the end of the board, as it will tend to "jump" towards you.
