Maker literacy refers not just to the act of making itself, but to a higher-order understanding of the context surrounding the project and the skills necessary to organize and coordinate the process of making.

According to the Maker Literacies Competencies Framework, some competencies of a maker literate person include:

  • Analyzing and exploring ideas, questions, problems, and potential solutions
  • Prototyping using iterative design principles
  • Applying knowledge gained into other situations
  • Understanding ethical and intellectual property issues surrounding making
