Frequently Asked Questions about ILL

1. What types of materials can I request via Interlibrary Loan?

You can request articles, book chapters, and books through Interlibrary Loan. Faculty and graduate students can request videos or DVDs via Interlibrary Loan. If you need a different type of item the library does not have, such as microfilm, contact the Interlibrary Loan department at 410-617-6804 or interlib@loyola.edu

2. How will the items I request be delivered to me?

Articles and other digital materials you request will be delivered to your Interlibrary Loan account as PDFs. Books and other physical items are delivered to the library for pickup. You will be notified via e-mail when items are ready for pickup.

3. How long does it take for an item to be delivered?

Articles and other digital materials will usually be delivered to your account within 24 hours. Books and other physical items will take about a week to arrive, and you'll be notified when they are ready for pickup.

4. Does Interlibrary Loan cost money?

No! The Interlibrary Loan service is free for users affiliated with Loyola Notre Dame Library.

5. How do I make a request?

The first time you use Interlibrary Loan, you'll need to make an account. This account is separate from the one you use to log into the library databases from off-campus. See Creating an Interlibrary Loan account for directions. Once you've made an account, select the type of item you want to request from the Request menu on the left. Then, fill out the form on the next page and select "Submit Request". For help with requests, see the Making a Request guide.

If you are searching in a database, such as Seeker, you will see a Request Through Interlibrary Loan button beside items that the library does not own. When you select that button, you'll log into your account (or create one) and then a request form will be automatically generated for your item. Make sure the item information is correct before hitting "Submit Request".

6. How long can I borrow or renew an Interlibrary Loan item?

Loan periods and renewals vary according to the lending libraries. Contact the Interlibrary Loan department at 410-617-6804 or interlib@loyola.edu with questions about lending periods.

7. How are Interlibrary Loan items different from USMAI items?

You can only request physical books from other USMAI libraries, whereas you can borrow digital items, such as articles and book chapters, via Interlibrary Loan. USMAI items come from other libraries in the consortium, but Interlibrary Loan items come from various libraries throughout the country.

8. If the item I need is checked out from LNDL or other USMAI libraries, can I request it through Interlibrary Loan?

Yes! Log into your account and fill out a request form for the item.

9. Who should I contact with questions about my account or requests?

You can contact the Interlibrary Loan department at 410-617-6804 or interlib@loyola.edu.

10. I take classes in or around the Loyola Timonium or Loyola Columbia campus. Can ILL items be delivered there?
