Do It for the Plot Spotlight Series: Writing Your Wellness Story

Loyola University Maryland Wellness, Health, and Student Services

Many of the Wellness, Health, and Student Services programs listed below support multiple dimensions of wellness—not just the categories they are placed under in this list.

Emotional

  • Counseling Center: Loyola’s Counseling Center offers students the opportunity to explore life transitions, to talk through issues, and to discover their own identities. From its dedicated relaxation room to programs for maintaining healthy sleep habits and managing stress during exams, the Counseling Center’s many services and resources may surprise you.
  • Green Bandana Brigade: The Green Bandana Brigade's goal is to spread awareness of campus, local, and national resources for students coping with mental health concerns. An individual with a green bandana on their backpack or in their office is identified as a safe, nonjudgmental person to approach with mental health-related difficulties. They know about available resources, and they can provide resource cards to assist others in getting help and support.
  • Title IX:  Loyola University Maryland is committed to providing an environment free from sex-based discrimination and harassment. With the help and guidance of Loyola's Title IX team, our campus community is committed to education, training, and services that encourage healthy, safe, and respectful relationships. At Loyola, we go beyond compliance with federal laws around gender-based violence, and we aspire to provide an environment that is rooted in our Jesuit traditions of justice and respect for others.

Physical

  • Club and Intramural Sports: Club and intramural sports are two of the largest activities on campus. For those with a competitive streak who aren’t quite ready to commit to the intense demands of a D-1 team, club sports are right up your alley. We have 26 club sports teams including swimming, ice hockey, sailing, rugby, lacrosse, baseball, and softball, to name just a few. All are run by students and compete at the local, regional, and national levels. Intramural sports are a great option for students looking for some friendly competition—whether you’re a seasoned soccer player looking to stay in shape or a softball first-timer. Loyola offers 12+ intramural individual and team sports.
  • Fitness and Aquatic Center: The Fitness & Aquatic Center (better known as the FAC) is so much more than a gym: here you’ll find state-of-the-art facilities to run, jump, lift, cycle, stretch, sweat, and play, so you can move your body, relieve stress, stay active, and attain your fitness goals. Meet like-minded people who also value physical wellness as part of their daily routine. Beyond the popular 6,000-sq. foot fitness center, discover Loyola’s group fitness and yoga classes, personal training, rock climbing wall, 14-lane swimming pool, hot tub and dry sauna, indoor track, and more.
  • Outdoor Adventure Experience: There’s nothing like the great outdoors—or spending time off campus enjoying them. That’s why Outdoor Adventure Experience (OAE) offers day and overnight trips year-round to go backpacking, hiking, kayaking, and more to area trails and parks. (Students can also apply, train for, and then organize and lead outdoor expeditions, providing a meaningful leadership opportunity for those who want to take their experience further.)
  • Student Health Center: The Student Health Center is Loyola’s on-campus medical resource, designed to complement the care you receive from your primary doctor at home. Because you can’t live well if you don’t feel well, the Health Center provides high-quality outpatient care in a convenient and confidential setting.
  • Disability and Accessibility Services: Disability and Accessibility Services work with students to provide the necessary support and modifications for students with learning differences, so that every student can participate in all Loyola programs and activities.

Spiritual

  • Campus Ministry: Wherever you are in your faith journey, Campus Ministry will help you explore who you are, strengthen your relationship with God, and grow into who you are becoming. Campus Ministry offers daily and weekly opportunities for Catholic and Ecumenical worship and music ministries, as well as numerous programs that foster discernment, social justice, community engagement, and connection.
  • Heart of Zen Meditation Group: The Heart of Zen Meditation Group, led by Bret Davis, Ph.D., professor of philosophy who studied and practiced Zen in Japan for 13 years, meets twice a week. All are welcome to join for guided meditation and discussion that quiets the minds and deepens focus and connection.
  • Interfaith: Loyola is a Catholic, Jesuit university that welcomes and celebrates individuals of all faith traditions, spiritual practices, and beliefs. We are committed to providing supportive guidance, building community, and creating inclusive spaces for meaning making, exploration, and spiritual development. Through interfaith prayer, events, and programs throughout the year, members of our community from diverse faith identities and backgrounds have the opportunity to come together to celebrate, learn from one another, and develop relationships for hope, renewal, and interfaith cooperation.
  • Retreats: The Campus Ministry Retreat Program encourages students from all backgrounds, faith traditions, and spiritualities to take time for reflection, discernment, conversation, community, rest, and delicious home-cooked food during a retreat. This is a way unlike any other to meet people and make connections with members of our community. The best part? No prior experience is necessary.
