The Library can assist faculty with digitizing articles, book chapters, or other materials to meet accessibility standards for use in Moodle or Brightspace. Submit a request for digitization.

Instructions for faculty:

  • Identify articles or book chapters needed.
  • Ensure your request adheres to copyright law.
    • Copyright law does not usually allow entire books (only selected chapters) or multiple journal articles from a single issue to be digitized unless permission has been cleared with the publisher. The Library will not digitize entire course packs.
    • The item must be owned or licensed by the Loyola Notre Dame Library or must be a legally owned personal copy of the instructor, department, or university.
    • Interlibrary Loan materials are for personal research only and may not be used as course materials. To use an item not currently owned by the Library or yourself, fill out the purchase request form or contact your library liaison to request that the Library order the material.
    • For items not accessible via online databases but under copyright, you are responsible for evaluating, on a case-by-case basis, whether the reserve request qualifies as a fair use. Use the fair use checklist to help make a fair use determination. Contact the Copyright Information Center, Danielle Whren Johnson at dwhren@loyola.edudwhren@ndm.edu or 410-617-6872 for help with fair use.
  • Only request the amount of the material needed to accomplish your specific educational purpose.
  • Typically, use should be limited to no more than 10 percent of a book with no chapters or fewer than 10 chapters, or for a book of 10 or more chapters, one chapter or one article per journal issue.
  • Use may exceed the above standards with a well-reasoned fair use argument.
  • If none of the above options apply, the library will obtain permission to use the item as long as the royalties do not exceed $250 per course per semester. Any copyright permissions obtained will be for the current semester only. Additional uses of the material beyond the current semester will require additional permission fees to be paid. Contact the Copyright Information Center at dwhren@loyola.edudwhren@ndm.edu or 410-617-6872 for assistance.
  • For items not owned by the library, send materials along with your name, course and the date needed by to the Loyola Notre Dame Library Access Services Department at 410-617-6801. Photocopies need to be clean with no writing or errant marks on them.
  • Once materials have been processed they will be sent to faculty.
