Types of Plagiarism

  • Deliberate plagiarism

    • Copying a paper from Google;

    • Cutting and pasting from sources;

    • Submitting a paper from a paper mill;

    • Using another student’s paper.

  • Self plagiarism

    • Submitting papers or portions of papers written for another course or school without approval of the course instructor.

  • Unintentional plagiarism

    • Not giving credit for another's ideas;

    • Changing just a few words;

    • Not using quotation marks where appropriate;

    • Not providing the proper citation information.

Tips for Avoiding Plagiarism

  • Know what plagiarism is;

  • Give yourself plenty of time to do your paper;

  • Have a clear idea of your purpose;

  • Take careful notes;

  • Keep track of your sources;

  • Know how to cite your paper;

  • Understand how to paraphrase and summarize;

  • Ask for help if you need it!
