Art therapy is an integrative mental health profession that combines active artmaking with psychological theory to help clients work through complex emotional realities and human experiences within a psychotherapeutic relationship.
Art therapists are credentialed mental health professionals who use artmaking and creative processes to help their clients express themselves beyond the use of language. As a professional practice, art therapy can be beneficial to individuals experiencing a range of psychological issues. Among other things, art therapists can work with children experiencing behavioral challenges, victims of trauma, and individuals with other health concerns like dementia.
